Alternative metals are used for men's and women's wedding bands (his/hers) or just a right hand ring. They are a great option when you are looking for cost effectiveness, a contemporary look, and rings that are hypoallergenic. All of these metals come in stylish designs and can fit any lifestyle. A few of the metals are available in other forms of jewelry, as well. Please see the Chisel line under the men's tab to view the selections.
Some common alternative metals are listed below. These metals cannot be sized and have different characteristics. We've included the Mohs Hardness Scale for each material to use for comparison. The higher the number the harder the metal. Sterling Silver, for instance, rates 2.5, gold rates approximately 2.5-3, and platinum has a 4-4.5 rate on the Mohs Scale.
Cobalt is a naturally occurring element. It is alloyed with other metals, such as, chromium, tungsten, and iron. Cobalt is as reflective, and weighs about the same as white gold. It is scratch resistant and it does not corrode easily. Cobalt is not as durable as titanium or tungsten but much harder than gold or platinum.
Cobalt rates 5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
Titanium is a natural gray–silver metal. It is light weight, highly durable, hypoallergenic, and retains its luster. Titanium is a great choice for those with skin sensitivities, since it does not contain nickel. This metal is very popular and cost-effective.
Titanium rates 6 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
Stainless Steel is composed of iron, carbon, and chromium and it has a wide range of uses. It is in the medical field, aerospace, and even in your kitchen, for starters. In regards to jewelry, stainless steel is corrosion, heat, and scratch resistant. It does not tarnish and is very durable.
Stainless Steel rates 6.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
Ceramic is a man made product and newer to the jewelry scene.
It is created from hi-tech aerospace material which is heat resistant, lightweight, and very versatile. This material is durable, hypoallergenic, and nearly impossible to scratch.
Ceramic rates 7 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
Tungsten is a rare metal found naturally on Earth. All tungsten rings are made from varying grades of tungsten carbide which is formed with other materials such as carbon, nickel, and titanium. A few properties of tungsten are that it is heavy in weight, scratch proof, and it keeps its luster.
This metal is very hard, rating 9 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
